My name is Katie Nellis and I have lived in Aurora since 2006. My husband and I live in the SE Aurora area with our preschool-aged son. I grew up in Northern California in the small town of Los Gatos and moved to Colorado in 1994.
I consider myself a lifelong student, which is obvious by my educational history! I obtained my Bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1998 and continued with my teaching education at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. While at CU-Boulder, I marched in the drum line of the Golden Buffalo Marching Band, playing both 3rd Bass Drum and cymbals.
In 2001, my life took me in a different direction, and I ended up back in Colorado when I began a career in banking in Denver. I worked in various positions with a national bank for 10 years, spending 5 years as a lender and relationship manager specializing in commercial real estate, personal, and mortgage lending. In that time, I completed a Master's of Business Administration degree with a certificate in Marketing at the University of Colorado at Denver.
Upon returning to teaching, I continued my education studies at the University of Colorado at Denver with graduate work in Linguistically Diverse and Culturally Responsive teaching. I hold secondary teaching credentials in Math, Science, and Business/Marketing. I also hold a professional credential in Business from the Colorado State Board of Community Colleges. Prior to joining the faculty of Vista PEAK, I taught in the Montbello community in Denver.
For fun, my husband and I like to hang out with our son! Life with a preschooler leaves not much time for anything else, but when I have time I enjoy cooking, exercising, and watching college football (GO BUFFS!).
I joined the faculty of Vista PEAK in January 2013, and I am proud to be a BISON! In 2013-2014, I am teaching Integrated Alg/Geo I and Business Law (BUS 216).
